London theaters have decided to stream archive recordings of their shows for free in June

While West End theaters may not reopen before 2021, UK theatre producers decided last week to begin streaming select archive recordings of their shows, for free. Non-for-profits and Commercial producers exchanged last week in a discussion on the possibility of allowing certain archive recordings to stream online, while theaters are closed. The first initiative comes from The Old Vic, which just launched a new digital program that will offer worldwide audiences full productions from its closed archives. The first show is an adaptation of Patrick Ness’s book, A Monster Calls, which will be released for free streaming starting June 5th at 7 PM BST for a limited time. Click here for a direct streaming link and to browse our complete list of free streaming theater!

The Old Vic will be sharing “a handful” of its archive productions through the next two months, according to its artistic director, Matthew Warchus.

Several commercial UK producers are also expected to make similar announcements in the next two weeks, although their shows will be made available in a unique Pay-Per-View model. Check back later this week for some exciting news!
