Aladdin The Broadway Musical (2023)

Set in the Arabian city of Agrabah, Aladdin follows the tale of a poor young man who is granted three wishes by a genie in a lamp, which he uses to woo a princess and to thwart the sultan's evil Grand Vizier.

The stage production of Aladdin premiered in Seattle in 2011 and then had a Toronto tryout in 2013. The Broadway production opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014 and had many international productions since - with the most notable one being the West End production which ran from 2016 to 2019.

Special performances of Aladdin were filmed in the West End shortly after the show closed. In addition to a week-long filming in an empty theater, an invite-only performance of Aladdin was filmed at the Prince Edward Theatre on August 31, 2019.

Unlike most digital captures, the filmed show did not feature the West End closing cast. Instead, Disney brought in performers from various Aladdin companies to create the 'ultimate' Aladdin cast for the filming.

The filming has stars from the original Broadway cast, West End, Sydney and US Tour productions. Ainsley Melham stars as Aladdin, Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie, Isabelle McCalla as Jasmine, Brian Gonzales as Babkak, Brandon O'Neill as Kassim, Robert Tripolino as Omar, Irvine Iqbal as Sultan, Don Darryl Rivera as Iago and Jonathan Freeman as Jafar.

Steam Sound & Motion, known for their other filmed productions such as Kinky Boots, The Phantom of the Opera, and Newsies filmed the production in the West End. The film was expected to be released in 2020 but was pushed back several times. It is not expected to be streaming exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.
