DIANA not the only Broadway Musical expected to be filmed for Netflix

As previously reported, Broadway's "Diana" will be filmed next month without an audience for a 2021 worldwide release on Netflix.

Producers of the Broadway musical have worked closely with Netflix and the various theater unions over the past two months to secure the deal and approve a safety plan that will allow for the actors in “Diana” to rehearse, record a cast album, and mount special performances for the Netflix recording.

With over 7 Broadway productions now available to stream on Netflix, the streaming platform has yet to film a Broadway musical as original content - "Diana" will be a first for the company, but as it appears today, not the last.

Chatter in closed theater groups reveals that Netflix, which is hungry for fresh content for H1 2021, is eyeing other Broadway productions to follow the approved safety plan which allows filming shows in empty theaters.

The streaming platform suggests completely financing the projects as "Netflix Originals" - resulting in little financial risk to the stage show’s producers or investors while extending the show’s brand worldwide.

Rumors indicate the shows joining the streaming platform's Broadway selections might include Mrs. Doubtfire (where a special sign-off from Disney's Buena Vista Theatrical might hinder such plans), Stage Entertainment's worldwide hit "Tina", which paused three successful productions around the world, and "Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of The Temptations" where rights negotiations appear complex.
