Double Feature: Two Productions of Gypsy Released for Free Streaming

This weekend, you can stream a GYPSY double feature - for free: two productions of the iconic Broadway classic are now available for free streaming.

Based on the true-life memoirs of legendary burlesque entertainer, Gypsy Rose Lee, the musical tells the tale of Momma Rose and her two daughters, Baby June and Louise, trekking across America in their family vaudeville act.

The score features songs that have since become show standards, such as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Some People", and of course “Rose’s Turn”.

Since Gypsy’s original production in 1959, Broadway has seen four revivals - appearing in the title roles were Angela Lansbury (1974), Tyne Daly (1989), Bernadette Peters (2003), and Patti LuPone (2008). The 2015 London revival starred Imelda Staunton.

Here's how to watch the two productions of Gypsy:

1. Stream Gypsy (2015)

The 2015 revival of Gypsy was the first London production to be seen for more than 35 years.

The musical, which originated in England’s Chichester Festival Theatre, transferred to the West End’s Savoy Theatre where it was filmed live by Emmy Award-winner Lonny Price for Ellen M. Krass Productions (Sweeney Todd, She Loves Me).

This production stars Imelda Staunton as Rose, an Academy Award-nominated actress best known for her appearance in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and many stage roles.

In their review of the West End show, The Guardian said: “Every facet of the character is caught by Imelda Staunton who gives one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen in musical theatre”.

The London production won five Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival, Best Actress in a Musical (Imelda Staunton), and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Lara Pulver).

The 2015 production of Gypsy is now available to stream through our list of free streaming musicals.

The film was nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for Midler.

The teleplay by Arthur Laurents is an adaptation of his book of the 1959 stage musical Gypsy, which was based on the 1957 autobiography Gypsy: A Memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee.
