Following Hamilton, Disney's Aladdin: Live from the West End will be released in July

As previously reported, Disney's hit West End musical Aladdin that was filmed just before closing in London last year will start streaming soon on Disney+.

As all Aladdin productions around the world are now shut down due to theater closures around the world, Disney decided to release both Hamilton (More details on Hamilton Streaming) and Aladdin before their expected release dates in 2021. An exclusive behind the scenes look of how Aladdin the musical was captured on film!

 

 

A representative from Disney confirmed the show was captured on film - and that broadcast details will indeed be following soon. The musical opened to critical acclaim at the Prince Edward Theatre on 15 June 2016 and closed nearly 3 years later. The upcoming live recording will feature Broadway cast member Trevor Dion Nicholas as Genie, joined by various cast members from several productions of Aladdin around the world for this special filming.

The Broadway and West End musical of Aladdin features the all songs from the original animated film as well as new music written by Tony, Olivier and eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken. The musical is still playing on Broadway in its sixth year at the Disney-owned New Amsterdam Theatre. To date, the musical was seen by more than 4 milllion people around the world.

This is not the first time Disney films one of their productions in its entierty. In 2017 Disney released a live recording of their Broadway musical Newsies, which never made it to the West End. The full recording is available here.
